Malden's response on various census records regarding his place of birth are perplexing. How could a person vacillate so many times about his correct place of birth?

Malden probably had a total of 3 wives, Letitia Ann Adkinson, May (Unknown), and Mabel J. (Unknown).

Least known or documented would be Letitia Ann Adkinson. There are no source citations to prove this marriage and no other records have been found. Most of those researchers that show her as a wife have their family files on Ancestry's web pages and most of them are marked as private so no public information is available.

However, the first marriage to Letitia may be possible because on the 1910 US Census, Malden was living with then current wife May but indicated that he was married twice and was first married at age 18. That would place the possible marriage to Letitia at about 1879 based on his age. The marriage to his second wife May would seem to be about 1892 based on census data and the age of their two sons.

I suspect that Mabel was a different person than the May who was listed as his wife on the 1900 through 1910 US Census records. All previous census records were consistent in showing her name as "May" but beginning with the 1920 US Census shows that Malden had moved to Florida and his then current wife's name was listed as "Mabel".

The 1920 and 1930 US Census records were consistent in showing the wife's name as "Mabel" as was the 1935 Florida State Census. The US Census records show that Mabel was born in Wisconsin which is a different birth location than that shown for his previous wife, "May", who always indicated that she was born in Illinois. In fact the birth locations of the wife's parents as listed on the census forms differed between May and Mabel also suggesting that they were different persons.

The most important proof that May and Mabel were different persons appears on the 1930 US Census in which Malden indicated that he was married at age 51 and Mabel indicated age 41. These ages would suggest that they were married about 1912 which is far beyond the estimated marriage date to May which was about 1892 based on census info and the age of their 2 sons.

Unfortunately there are no source citations to show an exact marriage date or the full names of the brides for either Letitia, May, or Mabel. Malden seemed to move around much with residences in Missouri, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Kansas, and Florida.
