Mary Ellen was an illegitimate birth to Clarissa Fast who apparently was living with Rezin Malott at the time. Rezin was married to Clarissa's sister, Mary Ellen Fast. Originally Mary's name appeared as Mary Fast on the census records. Similar to what her sister Harriet and her brother, Duncan, did later in life, she adopted the use of what is believed to be her biological father's surname and called herself Mary Ellen Malott.
