Mary's father lived in Richland County, Ohio in 1840, so this makes sense. Also, the following obit is helpful.
Bowman Mary Magdalene (Hoffman) died Feb. 1, 1907, aged 81 years, 10 months and 13 days. She was a native of York County, Penn., where she was born March 18, 1825. At the age of ten she moved with her parents to Morrow County, Ohio. When she was twelve years of age, her mother died. In 1843 she married Henry Bowman, and they had four daughters and one son, two daughters and the son preceding their mother in death. In 1847 the family moved to Albion, where they resided for nine years, when they moved to Jefferson Twp. Her husband died Nov. 18, 1857 [sic]. For several years she kept house for her brother, Adam in Elkhart Twp. She was married July 1, 1863 to Philip Bowman, and they had one son. Philip died Jan. 19, 1890, and for the past eleven years, she has resided with her daughter, Mrs. M. E. McEwen. She was one of the charter members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Albion, organized in April 1848. Of her parents' family of six sons and three daughters, one member remains, Jesse E. Hoffman of this city. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. M. E. McEwen of this city, Mrs. E. L. Enders of Wawaka; one son, Elmer S. of Kendallville; one stepdaughter, Mrs. W. A. McEwen of near Brimfield; one stepson, S. Bowman of Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren. The obsequies were held at Evangelical Lutheran Church Sunday. Burial, Albion Cemetery beside her first husband. + 2-?-1907. -------------------------------------------

Mary married Phillip Bowman, son of John Jacob Bowman and Charlotte Stough, on 1 July 1863.1 (Phillip Bowman was born on 4 February 1817 in Lisbon, OH,1 2 4 died on 19 January 1890 in Albion Township, Noble County, IN 4 and was buried after 19 January 1890 in Albion, IN 2 4.)

NOTE - Only Samuel Elmer Bowman, age 14, shown on this census record was a biological child of Mary M. Hoffman and Phillip Bowman. The daughter, Alice, was a child of Phillip's first wife, Lydia Harlan. The niece shown on this census record was evidently a niece to Mary Hoffman. .
Marriage Notes:
Mary was previously married to Henry Bowman. It appears that Henry and Phillip Bowman were not brothers but they must have been related in some way.
