  General Notes:

The 1880 US Census shows Joseph living at the home of David Lance and his wife, Viola. Joseph was listed as "Father". This would seem to be the correct census of Joseph Hudson because his age and birth location are correct but his relationship to either David Lance or Viola is a mystery. If he were the father of David, then why do they have different surnames. If he instead was the father of Viola, then why does Viola show the birth location of her father to have been in Ohio instead of Pennsylvania where Joseph was born.

Following the death of his wife, Charlotte Bowman, in 1863 Joseph Hudson was re-married to a wife named Phebe whose birth location was in New York. On the 1880 US Census, Viola showed her mother's birth location to be Ohio instead of New York. Besides, Viola's birth year was in 1857 which was while Joseph was still married to Charlotte.

There is one other strong possibility of a daughter of Joseph and Charlotte Hudson named Manerva who was born in Ohio in 1857. Little is known about Manerva other than her one appearance in the 1870 US Census with her parents. However, that census shows her with a middle initial of V which means her full name could have been Manerva Viola Hudson. And therefore she could have been the wife of David Lance and therefore, Joseph should have been listed on the 1880 US Census as "Father-in-Law" instead of "Father".

Joseph married Charlotte Bowman, daughter of Philip Casper Bowman and Katharine Fast, on 20 January 1820 in Pennsylvania.^{1 2 3} (Charlotte Bowman was born on 2 March 1794 in Redstone, PA,^{1 2 3 9} died on 15 September 1863 in Clinton County, IA ^{1 2 3 9} and was buried after 15 September 1863 in Washington Cemetery, Clinton County, IA ⁹.)

Charlotte Bowman (1794-1863)

Charlotte (Bowman) Gault and Joseph Hudson were married January 20, 1820, in Pennsylvania. Joseph Hudson was born September 30, 1800. They lived for a short time at Girard, Pennsylvania, and moved to Green, Mahoning county, Ohio, about 1822. In 1835 they moved to Randolph, Portage county, Ohio. They lived there until 1856, when they moved to Iowa. They made the trip overland, leaving Randolph May 9th, and arriving at their destination in Iowa June 3.

Charlotte Hudson died September 15, 1863, aged 69 years and six months, and was buried near their home in Iowa.

Joseph Hudson returned to Medina county, Ohio, where he died April 2, 1881, aged 81 years, and was buried at Lafayette, Medina county.
