One researcher, Glenn K. Fast, indicates that Joseph was briefly married to Margaret Pople but provides no source citations for the marriage. No supporting documents have been found. They may have had one son, Sterling Shuttlesworth, born about 1899 which means the marriage was about 1898. It is not know what happened to Margaret Pople or Sterling Shuttlesworth. There is a death recorded in Marion County, West Virginia for a Margaret Pople in 1911 but she was about 71 years old and not the correct person.

Joseph's 2nd wife was Claudia Moore whom he married probably about 1913 but no supporting documents for that marriage have been found. His World War I Draft Enlistment Card dated about 1917 shows his wife's name as Claudia. The marriage record for their daughter from Los Angeles County, California in 1948 shows Claudia surname as Moore.
