NOTE - This census record shows a classic example of a supervisor making erroneous corrections on conflicting data entered by the original enumerator. George's age was originally entered correctly as 23 but somehow the enumerator calculated an incorrect birth year of 1877 when it should have been 1876.
The actual person was not always there face to face with an enumerator so sometimes these dates and ages came from spouses, children, or even neighbors. When the record was returned to the supervisor, the conflicting birth year and age were noticed but instead of changing the birth year, the supervisor changed the age from 23 to 22.
I believe that this was probably the standard procedure within the Census Office in that a persons age was changed to make it match whatever month and year were written down by the enumerator. This explains why there are many instances of ages being recorded that are off by one year. Most people knew how old they were but the celebration of a person's birthday that are common today was not celebrated in a similar fashion back then. Thus the true age would be given to the enumerator but many had problems doing the math calculation to come up with the correct birth year. The conversation probably went like this: "So, you are 53 years old right now. That means you were born in XXXX." If the calculation was done incorrectly, the supervisor would end up changing the age to match the calculation.
If his birth date was 31 Aug 1876, then his age should have been 23 instead of 22.
