Portage Rotary celebrates 40th anniversary

PORTAGE -- Portage Rotary Club members past and present came together on June 22 at the Portage Yacht Club for the group's annual installation banquet and celebration of its 40th anniversary.

The special celebration was attended by a number of past members, including the club's Charter President David Willis, charter member Russell Willis, and charter members and still current Portage Rotarians Leo Hatch and Robert Schumacker. Also attending was Portage Mayor Doug Olson, son of charter member Arthur Olson; Charlotte Moore, widow of longtime member Roger Moore and Wanda Beile, widow of longtime member Bill Beile.

David Willis, who now resides in Indianapolis, spoke to the membership about the club's and the city's history. Willis also conducted the installation of the new officers for the 2001-2002 year.

Another highlight of the evening was the recognition of member Marge Zelenka as a Paul Harris Fellow. For her 14 years of dedicated service to the club, a $1,000 donation to the Rotary Foundation was made in her name. The Paul Harris Fellow award is named in honor of Rotary's founder.

Members receiving perfect attendance awards included Sandy Becker, Steve Collins, Ron Szabo, Jerry Zelenka and Marge Zelenka.

The Portage Rotary Club was officially chartered on January 24, 1962, at the Student Union Building of Valparaiso. Charter officers were David Willis, president; Dean Snider, vice president; Dr. Billy Coppes, secretary; Robert Schumacker, treasurer; Marvin Cain, director; and Edward Zeigler, director.

Charter members were Dr. Milton Carlson, Roy Claussen, Donald Cooper, Henry Dykstra, Jr., Leo Hatch, Earl Hefner, Richard Lightfoot, Roy Lindstrom, Raymond Lustgarten, Wallace McCormack, Arthur Olson, Clifford Prentice, Robert Robbins, Walter Slanger, Clayton Stonehouse, Thomas Strieter and Russell Willis.

The Portage Rotary Club currently has 37 members and annually donates to the community thousands of dollars raised among its membership without fund-raisers.
